Bridle Path
Balancing carefully, I walked up the steep hill on top of the oil pipe with my family behind me. After a long half hour, we reached the top to find a stunning view of Lyttelton and Heathcote valley. Dad suggested that we follow the pipe down the hill till it meets the Lyttelton side of bridle path. We descended down the steep slope next to the pipeline until quicker than we thought we found the big wide path. It led to the shoulder of the hill where it meets the Heathcote side of Bridle Path. It had an incredible view of the Lyttelton harbour and Heathcote valley. It was a very nice hot but not too hot day, gentle breeze and nice 22-23 degrees. We finished off by sliding down the pipe back to where we started. Happy, but tired!

On Friday the 17th of March, about 40 year 5-8's went to Jellie Park to represent Mt Pleasant for swimming. The day started off with the 9 year old girls freestyle and 'WHISTLE, get set, CLAP! (literally).
Even through the hot and stuffiness of the room, you could still feel the nervousness from all the competitors. With every scream, every shout, every second, everyone, including me, got more and more anxious. By now, all freestyle races have been, and gone. Along with my voice.
Backstroke. I'm real nervous now. Before I know it, it's my race. I leave my friends. They wish me luck. Lining up is the worst bit. I meet my competition; Tall, slim, swimming built girls. I lie on my back. CLAP. I get third in my heat. The first thing I think is finals. And I'm sitting down again. Once again, we brake the surface. I don't make it to Canterburys but I'm glad I made it this far.
Next up is Breaststroke. 9 year old boys. My brother. As he leaves, I wish him luck. CLAP. Time moves so fast! It's already 12 year old girls. Me. It's all a fumble. ‘Whistle, get set, Clap!’ I brake the glossy surface. Kick, glide, pull. Kick, glide, pull. I get fourth. As I jump out I feel a hand thump on my back and say well done. Now the only thing I can hear and the only thing whizzing around my head is...
‘Whistle, get set, CLAP!’
Should animals be kept in Zoos?
Should animals be kept in Zoos? - By Ella Joblin 22/5/17
There are pros (good things) about keeping animals in Zoos.
Keeping animals in Zoos keeps them safe from being hunted e.g. Elephant tusks for Ivory and Fur from the lions. It also lets us keep an eye on and protect endangered species.
School children can visit and learn about the different animals without having to go to their countries to see them for themselves. e.g. -Antarctica - Penguins // Australia - Kangaroos // Africa - Rhino
The animals are fed every day by the zoo keepers so they will never go hungry.
And it gives people like doctors the opportunity to do research on different animals and to monitor them closely if they are sick.

There are also cons (bad things) about keeping animals in Zoos.
Capturing wild animals is cruel and hurts the animals. There is not much space for the animals to run free when they are locked up in cages. Animals born in a zoo can live their whole life without ever knowing their natural habitat - if they are ever released into the wild they won’t know what to do. People don’t always respect animals in the zoo. They might throw things at the animals or tease the animals - and make the animals scared or afraid.
I think that animals should be kept in Zoos because they are kept safe there and never go hungry. The animals that are almost extinct are looked after and they may be able to have more babies in the zoo.
Should people with terminal illnesses be allowed to have doctor assisted suicide? Sailor.
Should people with terminal illnesses be allowed to have doctor assisted suicide?
A chronically ill man is suffering in pain and feels like he has become a burden to his family. A lonely widow is suffering and has know one to to offer care and support. They've lost their independence, and all quality of life has gone down the drain. These people are suffering emotionally and physically and they have a right to end their life if they want to but we need to do everything we can to help them change their minds before they make that decision. That is why i think that doctor assisted suicide should be illegal across the whole world.
Some people think that changing the law could send a message that some people's lives are not worth living. That is entirely wrong everyone's lives are worth living, everyone is loved, whether or not they have a terminal illness or not. Those that do, well we need to stand by them and fight.
Chronic and life limiting illnesses might make a person feel like they've lost all control of their lives and they may feel like the only way they can gain some control is to take their lives. ‘If they can’t control their illness then they can control how the die.
Physician assisted suicide is legal in five states, and it is an option given to certain people via a court decision. Individuals must have a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less to live. They also need a willing doctor to participate and they don’t have to if they wish. Some people call it ‘death with dignity’ but really is it? The definition of dignity is ‘the state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect’ i don’t know how having assisted suicide is worthy of honour and respect. In my opinion that should not be the only way you feel that you can gain control. This is wrong and we need to change this.
We need to help those that feel like a burden, feel important those who have know one, feel like they have everyone's support and care. Think about what things you would feel if you have a life limiting illness you may have know one looking after you, you may not be able to do anything by yourself. Scarlet says that she would feel deserted and rejected and just plain sad. We need to help those people gain control.
Sailor.
Argument Writing - NZ vs Australia
Should New Zealanders living in Australia have the same rights as Australians living in New Zealand?
Australia vs New Zealand. New Zealand vs Australia. In my opinion, New Zealand is WAY nicer! You might think otherwise, but today I’m going to prove to you that my opinion is correct…
Should New Zealanders living in Australia have the same rights as Australians living in New Zealand? That question is the key to proving my point…
Australia is getting harder and harder to go live in by the minute. This is because the Australian Immigration Minister thinks that New Zealand is a ‘backdoor route’ to Australia. This is because New Zealand used to have special entry to Australia which means we had a Special Category visa which is different from other visa’s and means it's easier to get in Australia rather than coming from different parts of the world. Laws are being written now, that will mean New Zealanders studying in Australia will have to study as international students and pay full fees rather than having the benefits of Australian students. From next year on, if you are from New Zealand but are at studying at University in Australia, fees will rise from $7000 per year, to over $20,000! This will effect over 12,000 Kiwis and bring most of them back to New Zealand. Is this fair?
Should we treat Australians the way they treat us? Around 1,500,000 Australian’s came to New Zealand over the last year. That’s 9,400 less than the year before. When Aussies come to New Zealand, they get granted a Special Category Visa (SCV) which lets them basically do whatever they like. Such as, living, working and studying all in New Zealand. You get this visa when you enter NZ and loose it when you leave. Any Australian can apply for a SCV unless they have a criminal record or temporarily staying in Australia. Mr Malcolm who is an immigration consultant says ‘We need to start treating Australians who stay here the same way as they treat us.’ Do we need to make New Zealand and Australia's rights even?
When we travel to Australia, and go to live, sometimes even just for a holiday, we are seen as foreigners who need to be controlled. Just over 1,195,240 New Zealanders went to Australia over the past year and those numbers will keep getting lower and lower since Australia is getting stricter and stricter. We used to be treated equal to what their rights are when they come to New Zealand but now the laws are being changed. Some of which are… Making us pay more living fees, toughening the rules on going university and much more. Should we make our rights even? I mean we are pacific neighbors.
If you want to go live with your family in Australia, that’s all good, but you may have some financial problems as it is very expensive…. If you are a family of four with two children you will have to pay $7200 (Australian) to get permanent residency, then on top of that, $570 (Australian) for citizenship. That still doesn’t include education or housing! Crazy right?! There’s still more to come. If you want to apply for an Australian citizenship you must have been a permanent resident first for at least four years. Is it really worth it?
I don’t think this is fair. Why should we let Australians have the easy road to our county when we have a difficult time trying to go to theirs?! We need to toughen up and put Australia in their place. Aren’t you always taught to treat others the way you want to be treated? We just want to make us even. Bring it on Australia we are going to level the playing field…..

Animal testing should be banned
Animal testing should be banned
By Kiera
Every year over one-hundred million animals are locked behind bars terrified, helpless with no food, water or hope. Most of these animals are in pain. We are treating them like disposable science equipment. Why are we using animals that are not ours to test our product?. This needs to stop! The animals can't speak, so we must speak for them and fight for these poor animals rights.
It is cruel to put animals through such pain to bring products such as; shampoo, makeup and toothpaste to the shelves. Fish, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and monkeys, are only some of the animals used for testing. The tests are used to make sure the product is safe, but some of the tests aren’t even accurate. Majority of animals have similar DNA makeup as humans, so excluding humans animals are the best option for companies to test their products. Colgate and dove are one of the many companies to test their products on animals. Animals are also are facing untold suffering for the beauty Industry’s.
The animals used for testing are treated like disposable science equipment. The animals are locked in small cages in unfamiliar surroundings, with bright lights, and no food or water. They get tied down to the table and the horrific painful tests begin. As soon as the animal has been tested it dies from either; the test, being forced to breath in toxic fumes, from having holes drilled in their skulls, their skin burned of,f their spinal cord crushed, or suffocated, some animals even self manipulate because of anxiety. Over 100 million animals are killed each year due to animal testing.
Replacing animal testing does not mean putting humans at risk. The alternatives for animal testing are quicker cheaper more effective and more accurate. Why are we using animals that are not ours to experiment on? Especially because there are alternatives to these cruel experiments. Skin allergy tests on most animals only predict human reaction 75% of the time. But a combo of chemistry, and cell-based alternative methods are shown accurate 90% of the time. Why are we choosing to hurt innocent animals over a more accurate cheaper and quicker alternatives, that don’t involve human risk.
In conclusion animal testing is horrible and should be banned. Why are we choosing to let Over 100 million animals die, for shampoo, makeup and toothpaste. Instead we should use alternative methods, to save these animals from unnecessary pain and suffering.

Rugby League is better than rugby
Rugby League is better than rugby
I believe that league is better than rugby. It's exicting, free flowing, and full of interesting people
If you want to meet different people, and hang out with a range of cultures…. then, play rugby league.
The majority of rugby league players are pacific islanders and maori. At least 11 players in my league team are those ethnicities. People that play rugby union are mainly pakeha, and many don't really hang out with many pacific islanders. There’s no reason why people can't get on together. My mum is pakeha and she comes to all my league games. She gets on with everyone there, but I worry that many pakeha don't really chose to mix with a wide range of pacific cultures.
People can be very snobby and stereotypical about sport. One of the stereotypes about league players is that they are all come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, are gang members, and that they all smoke. I strongly disagree. Sure, league attracts people from different backgrounds, but this doesn't mean they are bad people and not all people in league are like that. All people in sport know that smoking is bad and most choose not to do it.
Rugby league is a fast & free flowing game, that does not have as many stops as rugby union. For example in league during the scrum the ball doesn't have to be put in the middle. This means you’ll get to see the backs play the ball faster. The team can just roll ball to their side and there is no line outs. In league you see more action, it's a lot more technical.
If you watch league, you’ll be seeing a lot of action. Kicking, big hits, great runs and amazing tries! The reason is, you only have 5 chances to score and you usually kick it on the 5th because if you get tackled on 5th, it’s a turn over to the other team.
In conclusion I think that rugby league is better than rugby union and I hope I've convinced you to feel the same.
Why homework should be banned.
Why Homework Should be banned!
I hate homework and I agree with many others who think it should be banned. There are reasons why banning homework would make sense. Some schools already have a no homework rule - Why! Well then - here are 5 reasons why homework should be banned.
WE ALREADY WORK HARD AT SCHOOL: Students spend six - seven hours during the day doing school work. They work hard at school all day - The rest of the day should belong to them
It is pointless to have students completing homework when they have been in class most of the day doing the same thing.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: Homework can make things challenging for students with busy schedules of afterschool activities . There is not much time after school for homework especially for kids who do sports after school or Art classes. These are important to refresh body and mind
Mistakes might go unnoticed at home - then we are not really learning anything..
With homework you can make mistakes or complete a task incorrectly without realising
But Doing a project in class is easier when learning something new. You can ask classmates or your teacher for help. Also when you're at home, you could be completing your homework incorrectly, and if your parent is not able to help you then you will have to wait till the next day of school to get the help you’ll need.
I think homework should be done in school and in class with peers to help students understand the ideas better. I think reading just 30 minutes a day is enough to do at home.
STRESS: too much homework or things to achieve after a long school day causes stress in kids. It can be too much after being tired at the end of the day and feeling another lot of work to complete is overwhelming
OVERLOAD / BURNOUT
Too much to do after school can lead to burnout - and not getting anything done or learning much . The brain needs a rest and benefits from a break from school work after school
FAMILY TIME IS AS IMPORTANT AS HOMEWORK TIME FOR LEARNING. Homework is taking up all my spare time after school. But we NEED spare time because it refreshes our bodies and minds
Free time is also very important to help our minds be creative.

Should children's beauty pageants be banned
Should children's beauty pageants be banned
We have all heard of beauty pageants. If you haven't, essentially it's basically a contest to judge the looks of a child. I am here to talk about the problems with beauty pageants.
The mothers are often obsessed with winning and treat their children like objects. Some people believe that putting your child in beauty pageants would be good for your children, making your child confident .
Being part of tv shows and money as a prize, might be tempting, but with every benefit there is always a downfall. Beauty pageants are all that some people have but, at what cost? There are cases where families have earned millions of dollars but have had their daughters stalked or sexually assaulted. It isn't just that, if you make your child’s value based primarily on looks, they might develop serious psychological issues.
As I already mentioned, beauty pageants can cause psychological problems. Some of these problems are depression, eating disorders/bulimia and low self esteem. In other words, your daughter would have the mindset of being beautiful and obsessed with how they look. Worried that if they don't look beautiful, they will find themselves as ugly. Just like hoarding, it’s a mental disease and with most mental problems, it can take years of therapy and some people just don’t kick the habit.
Entering your own child into a contest and sexualizing your daughter... if you didn’t think that was bad enough, well, a pageant mum gave her teenage daughter tapeworm pills to lose weight. Some of the mothers treat their children like objects, and that just disgusts me.
But they aren't all bad. There is something called natural pageants, which have no make up, so the children are judged on their natural looks. But, then again, looks are on the inside not the outside and beauty pageants aren't that at all. They give children a mindset of having to be something they're not, and these children want to be beautiful ... at mental and physical costs. It isn't just the children, it's the parents. They can do mental things to make sure their child wins. I hope I have changed your opinion about beauty pageants and why they are bad.

Smoking should be banned.
Smoking should be banned.
By Isla Joyce
There’s nothing worse than walking past someone in the street, taking a big, refreshing breath of air, only to find that your lungs are not being filled up with oxygen. You try to cough it out, but you just keep breathing in more of this deadly smoke. That was one breath that you will never get back. Smoking should be banned.
Cigarette smoking causes around 5,000 deaths in NZ each year. That's 13 people a day. Smoking can provide many other problems and troubles as well as death. Over 60 of the chemicals found in cigarette smoke can cause some type of cancer. Your lungs are an important part of your body. Smoking harms your lungs by damaging the tiny hairs (cilia) that help clean your lungs. Without properly functioning cilia, toxic substances from the cigarette smoke stay in your lungs, which later on can move on to other organs through your bloodstream. Smoking also affects your looks. Smokers tend to get fine lines in their skin causing them to look older. The Ministry of Health says that ‘this might be because smoking reduces blood flow and may damage tissue’. Many of the chemicals in tobacco smoke gets into your bloodstream and can end up traveling through your body. Carbon monoxide takes away oxygen from your muscles, brain and body. Every cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure and narrows small blood vessels under your skin. Smoking should be banned.
Smoking is no cheap habit. It chews through money. Someone who smokes a pack a day spends about $117 a week which totals up to over $9,200 every year. Smoking doesn't just steal smokers money though. A University of Otago study in 2007 estimated that the direct cost of smoking to the Ministry of Health was $300 million to $350 million. Just think, if everyone stopped smoking we could use this money for something else. Something good, not something deadly.
People who smoke aren’t just affecting themselves. They're damaging and changing everyone around them. Like I said at the start. Every time you walk past someone smoking in the street, or sit next to a smoker in a pub you are breathing in cigarette smoke and harming your body. But that's not all that happens. Smokers are easy to pick out because;
a) they look older and worn
b) they stink.
The smell of smoking is not a nice smell. Also, what's more, it clings to you and follows you everywhere like a shadow. This is something washing machines need to wash more than once to get rid of. Smoking should be banned.
Thirteen people a day die of smoking, that is 13 too many. Smoking is not cheap, it costs each individual smoker who smokes a pack a day $9,200 a year. And lastly but certainly not least, smoking is not just harmful and hurtful to the smoker themself, it damages everyone around them. Smoking is deadly. Every time you light a cigarette, you are saying that your life isn't worth living.
Quit smoking, start living.

Argument writing - Cats vs Dogs
Cats vs Dogs
Your house is on fire, your cat slips out the back door and doesn’t care about you or anyone else but themselves. Where, if you had a dog, they would come sprinting into your bedroom, jump on you, bark, and do whatever they could to warn you about something bad happening.
You have invited a special friend over for dinner, and the second they walk in the door, your dog pounces onto them, licks them in the face and whacks them with their tail. Where if you had a cat, they would leave you and your friend in peace right until dessert when they come out for a late night hug.
This is the battle between cats and dogs.
First of all, cats are a lot lazier than dogs. Dogs sleep for about 12-14 hours per day. Cats sleep 16 hours per day on average (double the amount of humans). Even during the day, cats are lazier. Cats just stalk, pounce and chase random things. If you try to take your cat for a walk, you would have to put a leash on them, and that would look silly. Plus, they don’t even swim! Where dogs, will run after a ball or stick at the park, swim at the beach and even dance with you. This is one great thing about dogs.
After all of this exercise, to be honest, your dog stinks! You don’t even have to ask if someone has a dog or not, you’ll be able to smell them. None of the scented shampoos and brushing/combing/drying routines can do anything about it. You get their fur in your clothes, in your car and on the floor. Where if you have a cat, they can self-groom! There are no terrible smells at all. This is a positive thing about cats.
Did you know that when cats lick themselves after you have stroked them, it pretty much says they don’t like you or the smell of you. They obviously don’t like you when they walk on the kitchen bench and walk in the bath with muddy paws. Do they care about you? “Researchers at the University of Tokyo found that although pet cats are capable of recognizing their owner's voice, the felines usually choose to ignore their calls. Scientists observed 20 domesticated cats in their homes for eight months to see how the animals recognized and responded to different voices - both strangers' voices and the cats' owners - calling out the cats' names. The study found that 50 percent to 70 percent of the cats turned their heads at the sound and 30 percent moved their ears - typical reactions to hearing any sound. Just 10 percent of the felines responded to being called by meowing or moving their tails.” - http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/stories/yes-your-cat-is-ignoring-you
Yes, your cat is ignoring you.
Dogs do actually care about you. They have a better emotional connection to you than a cat. In a study published on May 30 in the journal Animal Cognition, University of London found dogs more likely to go to a crying person than someone humming or talking. Study researcher and psychologist Deborah Custance said in a statement. “The fact that the dogs differentiated between crying and humming indicates that their response to crying was not purely driven by curiosity. Rather, the crying carried greater emotional meaning for the dogs and provoked a stronger overall response than either humming or talking.”
I think dogs are better for people who are active and people that don’t go away that often. I think cats are good for people who come and go and still want to have nice pet.
Personally, I think dogs are better than cats.

Kids in our community need a Sports/Recreation centre because kids are getting bored of staying indoors all day and not doing anything sporty
Whose responsibility is it to keep kids fit?
It is the not only the child's responsibility but the adults responsibility to motivate the children to get fit and not let them watch tv all afternoon
What are the different point of view?
The parents point of view could be that they would like to get there kids fit and keeping them out of trouble. We could have the parents support.
The kids point of view is that they want a place to practice and play with there friends and keep fit but instead of having fun by doing troublesome stuff the can have fun with friend while getting fit
Why don't we have any rec centers in our community?
We only have 3 recreation centers in Christchurch
The University of Canterbury Recreation center is 11.3km away from Mt pleasant
The Bishopdale YMCA Recreation center is 13.3km away from Mt Pleasant
The Pioneer Recreation and Sports center is 8.2km away from Mt Pleasant
Who Can Help Us !
The Pioneer recreation and sport center is run by the city council so we could talk to the city council to see if they would like to participate in this process and maybe even run some events like they do at pioneer we could even try to get someone to run a basketball competition for the bays cluster instead of parents having to drive all the way over to cal stadium for us to play basketball. This way it would make parents very happy. This could also help lots of more people in the bays cluster area to potentially get more people active. We will obviously have to go get money to build and run the recreation center so we could potentially approach the government with our rant
How would it keep KIds Fit?
Some kids like playing Football, Basketball , Netball and all those other sports. If we built a big enough REC centre we could fit a football court, A netball court and a Basketball court. These facilities can be used by anyone, of course it would keep kids fit and out of trouble, they can practise their sports in this place.
Is it Mt Pleasants responsibility or the council?
The christchurch city council is focused on the city. If we build a REC centre who will build it?
Is it Mt Pleasants responsibility or the council? If we want a REC centre Mt Pleasant will have
to help build it but not just us i think the council will have to help as well. We need to get a lawyer and then discuss it to the council. We would do a foundation
Whose responsibility is it to find the money?
The kids and the parents could maybe do a fundraiser for the money.
The council could put some money into the rec centre.
We could do a stall and make some money to put into the rec centre.
SCRIPT
Wouldn’t you think a recreation center would make Mt Pleasant and the Bays cluster area whole lot better.
Our kids need to stay out of trouble and be more active, if we build a recreation centre that would be so good for kids instead of sitting inside watching GibbHD all day (he needs subs so go sub to him). Most kids play football, basketball, netball, hockey etc. We could build courts for those sports in the recreation center? kids are not active enough in this generation Youtube, Playstation, Xbox is all kids think about these day. How are you ment to lose weight when you are putting on more than you lose. This is put down to kids not having any motivation and to parents not motivating their kids to get fit. The weather is also to blame for this but with a recreation center we won't have to worry about the weather because all of the courts are indoor.
Having a recreation center in the Mt Pleasant community wouldn't only benefit the children it would also benefit the Parents not only would it give the parent some alone time it would do the parents a huge favor by not having to drive all the way over to pioneer or cowles stadium for us to play a 30 minute game. At this recreation centre we could contact the Christchurch city council and get them to help us set up and run competitions for all schools round the bays cluster area. I know for a fact that this would make the parents a whole lot happier and less stressed, some parents won't even have to drive their kids to the rec centre because for some kids it could just be a 5 or 2 minute walk down the road, or a quick drive for others.
The ministry of health say that
